SOME ENLIGHTENED EVENING

A Gala celebration to benefit
Yoga: The Art of Transformation

On Thursday, October 17, 2013, diplomats, philanthropists, artists, yogis, and celebrities joined at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium to celebrate Yoga: The Art of Transformation at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the world’s first exhibition on the art of yoga.

Some Enlightened Evening was a sumptuous affair of exceptional art, an inspiring program emceed by Hilaria and Alec Baldwin, and fine cuisine created by Floyd Cardoz, executive chef of North End Grill and winner of Top Chef Masters season 3.

The Gala featured a performance by Grammy-nominated vocalist Chandrika Krishnamurthy Tandon and memorable mingling with distinguished guests, among which were Secretary Wayne Clough, Dame Jillian Sackler, Her Excellency Ambassador Rao, Her Majesty Farah Pahlavi and yoga luminaries, including Robin Carnes, Lorenzo Cohen, Seane Corn, Vidya Dehejia, and John Schumacher.

After dinner, inner yogis and yoginis were unleashed at Transcendance, an unforgettable soiree hosted by the Silk Road Society, the Galleries’ dynamic group for young professionals. Guests dined on divine desserts and danced the night away with young art connoisseurs and yoga aficionados to Indian-inspired DJ beats by Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation.

During the Gala weekend of activities, patrons enjoyed a lecture by Curator Debra Diamond and members of an interdisciplinary team of scholars, practitioners, and advisors, including James Mallinson, John Schumacher, and Holly Shaffer, which explored the exhibition’s transhistorical nature and cultural significance. Guests also enjoyed a panel discussion on yoga and its global potential in the 21st century with Hilaria Baldwin and Art of Transformation honorees, viewed the world premiere of the groundbreaking documentary West Meets East, attended a dinner party at the residence of the Ambassador of India, and experienced a concert by Chandrika Krishnamurthy Tandon, celebrating yoga’s roots and transformative potential with a global ensemble of musicians.
