Featured Exhibition
Arts of the Indian Subcontinent and the Himalayas
"I am over my head in love with India!" wrote Charles Lang Freer, founder of the Freer Gallery of Art, in an 1894 letter home from his first trip to the subcontinent. Now, visitors can share in Freer's enthusiasm through this long-term installation, showcasing the Gallery's extraordinary collection of South Asian and Himalayan art—considered among the most important in the world.
The exhibition includes sublimely beautiful Buddhist, Jain, Hindu, and Islamic objects, as well as masterpieces of Mughal and Rajput paintings and lavishly decorated court arts and daggers made for the Mughal emperors. Exquisitely crafted late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century examples of gold jewelry are also on view.
