Thank you to all our sponsors and committee members for making the Encompassing the Globe Gala the largest and most successful Freer and Sackler one yet! We raised more than $500,000 for the critically acclaimed Encompassing the Globe exhibition and its numerous educational initiatives.

On the evening of June 20, a sold-out crowd of nearly four hundred guests arrived at the Haupt Garden and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery for cocktails and hors doeuvres. With the Smithsonian Castle in the background, guests were addressed by Julian Raby, Director of the Freer and Sackler Galleries, HH Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq al Said, the Minister of Culture and Heritage of Oman, and Manuel Pinho, the Minister of Economy and Innovation of Portugal. Guests then enjoyed a preview of Encompassing the Globe: Portugal and the World in the 16th and 17th Centuries as they proceeded to dinner in the Freer Gallery of Art.

In the Freer guests were welcomed by Cristian Samper, Acting Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The Honorable Anibal Cavaco Silva, President of Portugal, then presented a distinguished speech celebrating Portugals past and future. The evenings menu treated guests to the tastes of Portugal. Selected and prepared by the chefs of the Pestana Pousadas Group, the menu included escabeche tiger shrimp, almond-crusted rack of lamb, and a plate of delectable Portuguese desserts. A variety of wines donated by Vini Portugal and representing some of Portugals most distinguished vineyards was served throughout the evening.

Following dinner, guests were invited to the Meyer Auditorium for a spectacular performance by acclaimed fado musician Mariza. As guests exited the galleries they were presented with a copy of the exhibition catalogue, a bottle of Muscatel donated by Vini Portugal, a Mariza CD donated by the Portuguese Tourist Authority, and a set of Encompassing the Globe espresso cups donated by Cup & Saucer.
