A Closer Look - The Arts of Islam

From the late fifteenth century, artists in Iran, India, and Turkey also created drawings and paintings that were independent from a specific text. No longer bound by the strictures of the written word, artists relied for their subject on direct observation, poetic imagery, and their own imagination or a combination of these different sources. The compositions were often paired with samples of poetry and gathered in elegantly produced albums (muraqqa').
