photo of Freer's Javanese masqueJavanese Masque, written by Maria Oakey Dewing and directed by Thomas Dewing. Staged in Cornish, New Hampshire, on September 3, 1894, in honor of Charles Lang Freer, the masque took place outside High Court, an Italianate villa designed by Charles A. Platt, a resident of Cornish and the future architect of the Freer Gallery of Art. The performance included music by Antonin Dvořák, whose String Quartet no. 12 in F Major, the “American Quartet,” had premiered in Boston earlier that year.
