Asia After Dark: Afro-Asiatic Mash-Up
Featuring iona rozeal brown and Monstah Black
Saturday, June 2, 8 pm–midnight
Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and Enid A. Haupt’s Moongate Garden

Enid A. Haupt’s meditative Moongate Garden (adjacent to the Sackler Gallery) transforms into a Japanese playhouse for the first Asia After Dark of 2012. The evening features a mash-up performance of Japanese vogue dance, theater, storytelling, and hip-hop music choreographed by visual artist iona rozeal brown and performed by soloist dancer Monstah Black. Guests can create an expressive mask using Asian botanical symbols and Ashanti adinkra symbols from West Africa, make fun photo booth memories, and enjoy delicious Japanese fusion bites, specialty cocktails, dancing, and more.

Ticket Policy

All ticket sales are final. No refunds or exchanges.

Asia After Dark tickets are presale only and are available on this webpage beginning one month prior to the event date. Each ticket includes one free drink.

Up to five tickets can be ordered at a time online. Tickets can be picked up at the will-call tables 15 minutes before the event starts and until one hour before it ends. There is no admittance after this time. All tickets in each order will be distributed together (not individually). Any member of the party can pick up tickets with the transaction number on the email receipt. The person who placed the order can pick up tickets with either the email receipt or a photo ID. A photo ID is required to enter the museums.

Freer Gallery of Art: 1150 Independence Ave. SW; rain: 12th Street and Jefferson Drive SW

Check-In

Check-in for the Freer Gallery of Art is on the National Mall side, located at Jefferson Drive and 12th Street, SW. The handicapped entrance is at the south side of the museum, on Independence Avenue. In the event of inclement weather, check-in will begin at the south entrance of the Freer (1150 Independence Avenue SW). Check-in for the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is located in the Enid A. Haupt Garden, at 1050 Independence Avenue.

Things to Know

  • No food or drink is allowed in the galleries.
  • Guests must be at least 21 with a valid photo ID to attend; ID check will be enforced upon arrival and entrance to the museum.
  • All bags will be searched by security.
  • Personal items can be checked in designated coat rooms or lockers at your own discretion. The museums are not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
  • The closest Metro station is Smithsonian (Orange and Blue lines).
  • All ticket sales are final; no refunds or exchanges.
  • Will-call closes at 11 pm. There is no admittance after this time.
  • Bars and food are cash-only. An ATM is available at the Smithsonian Metro station (Independence Avenue entrance).
